The Best At-Home Gutter Cleaning Technique
Regular gutter cleaning is essential to the longevity of your roof and structure of your home. Here’s how to do it.
How do I Clean my Gutters?
Cleaning your gutters can be a bit of a chore, but here’s a simple method to help you get the job done safely and effectively.
Step 1:
The first step is, of course, safety. Be sure to use a sturdy ladder and wear gloves to protect your hands from debris. You’d be surprised what you’ll find there!
As an added safety bonus, ask a friend to put their foot on the bottom rung of the ladder for stability.
Step 2:
Once your ladder is stable and you are geared up, line a 5 gallon bucket with a trash bag or contractor bag. This is what you will use to empty the gutter contents into.
Step 3:
Start by removing any large debris like leaves, branches, or twigs from the gutters by hand. Leave them in a pile for easier cleanup at the end. This can be done from the ladder, or by getting onto the roof and carefully walking along the gutter line. Note that in order to walk along the gutter line, it is highly recommended to tie off with a harness to prevent falling.
Step 4:
After the big stuff is removed, the real cleaning begins. If there is large amounts of debris, use a gutter scooper, or gutter tool to remove the contents and empty them into the bag-lined bucket you have handy. You may need to fill the bucket several times depending on the severity of the debris buildup.
Step 5:
After the majority of the debris is removed, it’s time to do the finishing touches. Our favorite way to do this is to carefully walk along the gutter line with either a hand blower, or backpack blower. Slowly blow the debris out as you until you reach the end of your gutter line. If you do not have a harness, or this is outside of your comfort zone, you may also use a garden hose to push large amounts of water through your gutters and clear them out that way.
Quick Tip: Be sure to check those downspouts for clogging. You can bang on them with your hand, blow air down them, or shoot water down them to get them clear. Stubborn clogs will likely need to be removed by taking apart the elbow joint, clearing the debris and re-screwing them back in.
Step 6:
While cleaning, take the opportunity to inspect your gutters for any signs of damage such as rust, corrosion, sagging, or loose fasteners. If you notice a leak, use some liquid sealant to patch those holes!
Step 7:
Well, at this point I am sure you’ve noticed you’ve made a bit of a mess! Use a blower to spread out the debris that’s fallen on the ground. If you don’t want to wait for the next rain to do it, use a garden hose to wash off the outside of your gutters and facia boards that have likely gotten splashed with “gutter junk.”
Step 8:
Empty any bags of debris into your yard waste bin and you are all done! Those gutters should stay clean for 3-12 months depending on the amount of foliage you have around.

How often should I have my gutters cleaned?
The frequency of gutter cleaning depends on several factors, including the amount of foliage around your property and the local climate.
